Aurora Forecast: Predicting the Northern Lights

Short-Term Aurora Forecast: OVATION Model

The OVATION Aurora Forecast Model provides a short-term prediction of the location and intensity of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights. This product is based on the OVATION model and provides a 30 to 90-minute forecast, helping you plan your aurora viewing experience.

How to Use the Aurora Forecast

The OVATION Aurora Forecast Model is presented on a map with color-coded intensity levels. Red areas indicate high aurora activity, while green areas indicate moderate activity and blue areas indicate low activity. The map also shows the estimated time of arrival (ETA) of the aurora at different locations.

To use the forecast, simply select the desired time and location on the map. The intensity level and ETA will be displayed in the pop-up window. You can also zoom in or out to view the forecast for a specific region.

Additional Resources

In addition to the OVATION Aurora Forecast Model, there are several other resources available to help you plan your aurora viewing experience:

  • The Space Weather Prediction Center provides real-time updates on solar activity and geomagnetic conditions, which can affect the visibility of the aurora.
  • Aurora borealis mobile apps offer real-time alerts and predictions based on your location.
  • Local tourism operators can provide guided aurora viewing tours and offer tips on finding the best viewing spots.

With careful planning and the help of these resources, you can increase your chances of seeing the aurora borealis and capturing breathtaking images of this celestial phenomenon.
