A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake has struck northern Japan, causing widespread damage and injuries. The quake occurred at 10:54 p.m. local time (01:54 GMT) off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was located approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of the city of Sendai and had a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
